Firstly sorry if this is the wrong category. The “general off topic” category disappeared. I signed up for this community to connect with likeminded people with mental health and self esteem issues, but I notice the community is inactive. Maybe once upon a time it had more activity, but now mostly nothing. Maybe people sign up mostly to take the online courses in the academy. That was one of the reasons I signed up too for the academy courses, but I was also hoping to be social on here. That seems to have died down as I said many times before. Anyone else notice this?

Hello everyone. My name is Keyo and I accidentally stumbled upon this online community while searching for help regarding a situation I found myself in. So far, the website looks to have very helpful information in its Academy and Magazine sections. I'm browsing the forums looking to see how I can contribute something meaningful to topics already posted. I'm hoping to make some friends here or at least connect with people who share similar values and goals as myself.

I am part of nature, and nature is part of me. I am what I am in my communication and communion with all living things. I am an irreducible and coherent whole with the web of life on the planet. Nature, the human community and the universe is connected with the Cosmos. We recognize the deep truth that I am the other. This expresses the concept from contemporary physics of “entanglement”, which is a quantum phenomenon. All atoms, all cells are connected, deeply.” The friendship is the connection we feel for each other, wherever he is, other people, animals, plants, stars. I am part of society, and society is part of me. I am what I am in my communication and communion with my fellow humans.I am an irreducible and coherent whole with the community of humans on the planet.Goodreads, alexis karpouzos official steThe separate identity I attach to other humans and other things is but a convenient convention that facilitates my interaction with them. My family and my community are just as much “me” as the organs of my body. My body and mind, my family and my community, are interacting and interpenetrating, variously prevalent elements in the network of relations that encompasses all things in nature and the human world. The whole gamut of concepts and ideas that separates my identity, or the identity of any person or community, from the identity of other persons and communities are manifestations of this convenient but arbitrary convention. There are only gradients distinguishing individuals from each other and from their environment and no real divisions and boundaries. There are no “others” in the world: We are all living systems and we are all part of each other. Attempting to maintain the system I know as “me” through ruthless competition with the system I know as “you” is a grave mistake: It could damage the integrity of the embracing whole that frames both your life and mine. I cannot preserve my own life and wholeness by damaging that whole, even if damaging a part of it seems to bring me short-term advantage. When I harm you, or anyone else around me, I harm myself. Collaboration, not competition, is the royal road to the wholeness that hallmarks healthy systems in the world. Collaboration calls for empathy and solidarity, and ultimately for love. I do not and cannot love myself if I do not love you and others around me: We are part of the same whole and so are part of each other. Alexis karpouzos

I just joined.this group. I am in my late 70's in good health and living a comfortable life. I've been married for 56 years. We moved here to central Iowa because my son and his family moved here and I wanted to be a hands on grandmother. I like to contribute back to my community so I look for opportunities to serve mostly through my church. Outside of church I am a hospice volunteer and work with the Cub Scout pack that my grandson is in. I have had experience with mental health issues personally and in my family. So I have studied the effects of mental health issues on families, communities, and institutions. After spending 2 years trying to convince my church Mission committee to take up the subject, they have allowed me to get involved. I have recently become involved in a task force on homelessness in our community of 9000 people. I am the only one on the task force who is not employed by an agency or institution as a professional. I recently looked at a website https://www.stampoutstigma.com/ and I discovered their calendar of national observances. March 20, 2020 is national happiness day. That got me thinking about happiness and led me to this site. So here I am.

Where can I go make local friends?
Nlink replied to vinceforge 's topic in Friendship, Love, Relationship Forum
Join Community Groups and Clubs: Community groups and clubs are excellent platforms for meeting like-minded individuals who share similar interests. Look for local organizations, hobby groups, sports clubs, book clubs, or volunteering opportunities in your area. Engaging in activities you enjoy will naturally attract others with similar passions, providing a great foundation for building friendships. мParticipate in Local Classes or Workshops: Consider enrolling in local classes or workshops that align with your interests or hobbies. Whether it's a cooking class, art workshop, dance lessons, or language courses, these environments promote interaction and collaboration, creating opportunities to connect with fellow participants who share similar passions. -
Narr - in todays world being what it be with the internet and all it's devices, such thoughts exist in all age brackets today and those thoughts more out of control. If I could just say ...Self preservation is quite the opposite to my context when speaking about self exploration. Like letting go is what I have found key in terms of acceptance. That said, I respect your take and perhaps not quite reading you well. I am 53 having aged well before my time with a story I'd rather let go. I live in a house with my wife, daughter and grandson all doing the best we can to get along. I kind of have to laugh out loud at that one. My wife has a debilitating disease with support peoples that come to our house. She and I sleep in different rooms and we no longer have sex. It would so happen that intimacy was something very important to me and that whilst for sure we could still be intimate, my wife's happiness has taken a huge hit with such all the challengers she now faces. It's been going on for years where each passing one sees her condition slightly worsen. By the way I am not trying to compare here but simply share. I've been in my own room for years now having to accept that I will no longer have sex again and also my wife's depression combined with my own (as is how energy works kind of thing - no ones fault - or perhaps often mine - certainly not my wife's which is why I am still here - it is what it is) that, that once intimacy that I found so empowering and or comforting was no gone. I can't hug my wife as am often pushed away. I don't need the sex because I'm a person that can get enough just by being close and being gentle kind of thing. Long story short - Life's happenings regardless whatever can in some sense rob us of such things. Perhaps that term 'rob' a bit strong as it's only in my self reflection that I have found the power to be here for all my family as they too also seem to get enough from us all simply being present. Alas, I too still have fantasies about meeting someone else who might be able to afford me the interactions that most of us subscribe to being emotionally connected that is in a more inspiring and immune boosting kind of way. I seem to of digressed - my apologies. I guess the point for me is if I took to heart all the the recommendations regarding cutting out negativity out of my life, that would mean leaving my wife, my daughter and grandson whom are all in great need to some extent. I've done a lot of self reflection on such none of which I consider as self preservation but more for the greater good. Perhaps more complex than that but not wishing to write a book. I've come to accept my situation and in doing so have less a need for what more people think is community. The foundations on which today's community is built is based more upon economics than human values with the latter no more than a deceptive sale. So too I think it is the way with people and interactions when it comes to exterior values Vs that which lay within. The time I take out in order to sooth myself is more about letting go of what most strive for. Often it involves allowing myself to experience the pain of my self as well as those I love knowing too that like you, I also wish for that something that feels missing. I don't know really ... grasping at straws myself. I feel it is good to look after self in order to help others but not when it just becomes only about me. Yet it's OK to console ourselves if not always caught in a state of commiseration which too can help ... but many times more a trap. I find the general consensus on happiness can often be like that too. We don't want to preserve ourselves as much as be ourselves. Does that make sense? For me and mind you ... it's been quite a while. Just recovering from heart attack symptoms myself. I'm just winging it here but is mostly why I write and feel as I do. It seems the more we open up and be our true selves the less in need we become ... the less validation we need. Unfortanley most of our online content is all about the need for validation with an algorithm that instills reward and punishment. Very much on a community level but that is another story: How Google, Facebook Turned into Behavior Modification Empires. No link required. This aspect very present in most forums as well. I shower too - but on odd days. 0-0 ... yet my ability to convey the truth in a mindful way seems to be unscathed. Or at least I hope. We have become very much an exterior race. Kudos to you for opening up. I often feel the same way despite my claims but making gains through mindfulness or mindless activities that fall within my own ideals. All the best with your own.

Recently happiness.com gets flooded with scammers. I guess that's somewhat normal for a community, and maybe it means that we are growing, but I also feel really sad, disappointed, and at times mad about this development. Perhaps we are naive to think we can create a safe space anywhere for people to be themselves, create a supportive community, and relax. Maybe the lesson here is never to let our guard down, never to trust, and never to help anyone because it might be a scam. But this is not the world I want to live in. I want to actively work towards a world where people can trust each other, look out for each other, and support each other selflessly. You scammers are actively making this a whole lot harder, and it sucks! I am actively engaged in educating myself regarding racist stereotypes and demolishing white supremacy and heteronormative patriarchy. As a member of the community managers, I see the fake check images. So please explain why 99% of all "in your face sexy" white woman accounts and "older white men looking for real love after a successful life" accounts are run by black men mainly from Nigeria and Ghana? What does it tell about this world and our (internalized) racist, sexist, classist, colonialist, and what-not-ist stereotypes and how does it reinforce them? Maybe try to "trick" someone else into loving you for being this nice guy from Nigeria? Why invest time into pretending that you are a "random pornstar picture from the internet" lady when you could be YOU? It might even be faster. And I bet it's a lot easier to be yourself. I apologize to the people from Nigeria for this generalized thought upfront. I am aware that it's of cause, not all Nigerians. I don't want to be left with only one learning "If the person is from Nigeria, be careful it's likely that they want to rip you off." I don't want the name Nigeria ring an alarm bell in my mind. Do you see the damaging nature of those scammer interactions? I want to learn about Nigeria and the Nigerian people, the many different tribes and languages, about culture, food, traditions, and values instead. I want to be respectful, humble, open, amazed and appreciative, not mistrusting and expecting the worst. Try honesty - it's easier and more sustainable. It doesn't hurt your soul, spirit, your character - whatever you call it. You are beautiful and worthy the way you are! Thank you.

There is a force in the universe that is active in us, and is a great resource in our quest for a animated life and a conscious world. this force exists and is with us — indeed, it is in us — making use of it hinges on a crucial factor: the nature of your mindset. What’s Wrong with our Mindset? Mindset, This is an embracing concept — it does not stand for a rigorously scientific view, nor does it stand for a purely fictional one. But it does stand for a view of the world that people can recognize as their own. This is an embracing view, encompassing the whole gamut of values and feelings associated with one’s beliefs and convictions regarding the nature of the world. In the current scientific literature, there is a more rigorous but also more limited concept: this is “paradigm.” Originally developed by philosopher of science Thomas Kuhn to describe the fundamental changes in physics wrought by the shift from the Newtonian view of physical reality, to the Einsteinian relativistic view, in the course of the past decades the concept of paradigm has acquired a wider meaning. It extends from the concept of physical reality to a general concept of what we hold to be the nature of reality. We can speak of a materialistic paradigm, a vitalistic paradigm, a classical Newtonian paradigm, or a new quantum-science paradigm. Whether we give it thought or not, we all hold some variety of paradigm, even if it is not consciously recognized and articulated. This is also true of the concept of “mindset.” We all dispose of some variety of mindset, and that mindset is active and influential for us whether we recognize it or not. There is something fundamentally wrong with the mindset of most people in the modern world. That mindset is antiquated and misleading. People holding it are focused on acquiring material goods and fostering their own wealth, power and influence. They adopt a wasteful and often ostentatious lifestyle. They think that individuals have little or no influence on the way the world is going, and so there is no real need for individuals to feel responsible for the way the world is actually going. Life is a struggle for survival, where the fittest survives. Popular wisdom such as “make the most of your opportunities and never mind what comes after you — you only go around once” and “the world out there is a jungle, so take care of your own interests, because nobody else will care for it” are fairly typical examples. This is how the mind of the typical modern person is set to perceive the world. The values and behaviors inspired by the modern mindset have led to critical conditions in our social, economic, and ecological systems. They have fractured the integrity of the human community, dividing it into we and others, drawing the line in reference to common interests, or competing and perhaps opposing interests. This creates competition and conflict, and gives rise to violence. It leads to an unsustainable world. If we the modern mindset doesn’t change and evolve, we endanger not just our own well-being, but the survival of our species, but also we endanger the survival of all beings on planet earth. How to Change Your Mindset — Start with yourself. But how do you go about it? The first step is to ask yourself some fundamental questions. How do you relate to people, society, and nature around you? Are you part of them, or are you outside and perhaps above them? The honest answer you give, testifies to the nature of your mindset. Adopting an up-to-date mindset is not a quixotic endeavor: The shift from competition to reconciliation and partnership: a change from relationships, organizational models, and societal strategies based on competition to relationships and models based on principles of healing, reconciliation, forgiveness, and male–female partnership. The shift from greed and scarcity to sufficiency and caring: a change in values, perspectives, and approaches from the traditional self-centered and greedy mode toward a sense of the sufficient and the interpers onal concern of caring. The shift from outer to inner authority: a change from reliance on outer sources of “authority” to inner sources of “knowing.” The shift from separation to wholeness: a recognition of the wholeness and interconnectedness of all aspects of reality. The shift from mechanistic to living systems: a shift of attention from models of organizations based on mechanistic systems to perspectives and approaches rooted in the principles that inform the world of the living. The shift from organizational fragmentation to coherent integration: a shift from disintegrative, fragmented organizations with parts set against each other to goals and structures integrated, so they serve both those who participate in the organizations and those around them.

Hello! I am also new. What helped me with meditation is I started with guided meditations. You can download apps like BetterMe Mental Health and you can even go to YouTube and find great channels for guided meditation there. The Honest Guys are a good channel for this. As you do more guided meditations, you will have less difficulty meditating on your own. I hope this helps! Welcome to the community and have a great day! David -
Key facts Female genital mutilation (FGM) involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice has no health benefits for girls and women. FGM can cause severe bleeding and problems urinating, and later cysts, infections, as well as complications in childbirth and increased risk of newborn deaths. More than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone FGM in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia where FGM is practiced(1). FGM is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15. FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women. There is evidence suggesting greater involvement of health care providers in the practice. This is known as medicalization. The World Health Organization (WHO) is opposed to all types of FGM, and is opposed to health care providers performing FGM. Treatment of the health complications of FGM in 27 high prevalence countries is estimated to cost 1.4 billion USD per year and is projected to rise to 2.3 billion USD by 2047 if no action is taken . Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises all procedures that involve partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, or other injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. The practice is mostly carried out by traditional practitioners. In several settings, there is evidence suggesting greater involvement of health care providers in performing FGM due to the belief that the procedure is safer when medicalized. WHO strongly urges health care providers not to perform FGM. FGM is recognized internationally as a violation of the human rights of girls and women. It reflects deep-rooted inequality between the sexes, and constitutes an extreme form of discrimination against girls and women. It is nearly always carried out on minors and is a violation of the rights of children. The practice also violates a person's rights to health, security and physical integrity; the right to be free from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment; and the right to life, in instances when the procedure results in death. Types of FGM Female genital mutilation is classified into 4 major types: Type 1: this is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans (the external and visible part of the clitoris, which is a sensitive part of the female genitals), and/or the prepuce/ clitoral hood (the fold of skin surrounding the clitoral glans). Type 2: this is the partial or total removal of the clitoral glans and the labia minora (the inner folds of the vulva), with or without removal of the labia majora (the outer folds of skin of the vulva). Type 3: Also known as infibulation, this is the narrowing of the vaginal opening through the creation of a covering seal. The seal is formed by cutting and repositioning the labia minora, or labia majora, sometimes through stitching, with or without removal of the clitoral prepuce/clitoral hood and glans. Type 4: This includes all other harmful procedures to the female genitalia for non-medical purposes, e.g. pricking, piercing, incising, scraping and cauterizing the genital area. No health benefits, only harm FGM has no health benefits, and it harms girls and women in many ways. It involves removing and damaging healthy and normal female genital tissue, and interferes with the natural functions of girls' and women's bodies. Although all forms of FGM are associated with increased risk of health complications, the risk is greater with more severe forms of FGM. Immediate complications of FGM can include: severe pain excessive bleeding (haemorrhage) genital tissue swelling fever infections e.g., tetanus urinary problems wound healing problems injury to surrounding genital tissue shock death. Long-term complications can include: urinary problems (painful urination, urinary tract infections); vaginal problems (discharge, itching, bacterial vaginosis and other infections); menstrual problems (painful menstruations, difficulty in passing menstrual blood, etc.); scar tissue and keloid; sexual problems (pain during intercourse, decreased satisfaction, etc.); increased risk of childbirth complications (difficult delivery, excessive bleeding, caesarean section, need to resuscitate the baby, etc.) and newborn deaths; need for later surgeries: for example, the sealing or narrowing of the vaginal opening (Type 3) may lead to the practice of cutting open the sealed vagina later to allow for sexual intercourse and childbirth (deinfibulation2). Sometimes genital tissue is stitched again several times, including after childbirth, hence the woman goes through repeated opening and closing procedures, further increasing both immediate and long-term risks; psychological problems (depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, low self-esteem, etc.); Who is at risk? FGM is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and adolescence, and occasionally on adult women. According to available data from 30 countries where FGM is practiced in the Western, Eastern, and North-Eastern regions of Africa, and some countries in the Middle East and Asia, more than 200 million girls and women alive today have been subjected to the practice with more than 3 million girls estimated to be at risk of FGM annually. FGM is therefore of global concern. Cultural and social factors for performing FGM The reasons why FGM is performed vary from one region to another as well as over time, and include a mix of sociocultural factors within families and communities. Where FGM is a social convention (social norm), the social pressure to conform to what others do and have been doing, as well as the need to be accepted socially and the fear of being rejected by the community, are strong motivations to perpetuate the practice. FGM is often considered a necessary part of raising a girl, and a way to prepare her for adulthood and marriage. FGM is often motivated by beliefs about what is considered acceptable sexual behaviour. It aims to ensure premarital virginity and marital fidelity. Where it is believed that FGM increases marriageability, it is more likely to be carried out. FGM is associated with cultural ideals of femininity and modesty, which include the notion that girls are clean and beautiful after removal of body parts that are considered unclean, unfeminine or male. Some people believe that the practice has religious support, although no religious scripts prescribe the practice. Religious leaders take varying positions with regard to FGM: some promote it, some consider it irrelevant to religion, and others contribute to its elimination. Local structures of power and authority, such as community leaders, religious leaders, circumcisers, and even some medical personnel can contribute to upholding the practice. Likewise, when informed, they can be effective advocates for abandonment of FGM.
