Reducing plastic

I always try to carry a tote bag around with me in case I pop to the supermarket while out, as I hate having to get plastic bags. If I do, then I end up using that to put all my plastic waste in! Luckily it seems more and more stores are introducing paper bags - I hope this becomes mandatory in the Read more… future. Good idea about the toothbrushes from @Bjoern I am guilty of buying new ones every few months, so need to find a way to stop that.. any tips on a good brand?
So much fruit and vegetable is packaged, so I try to avoid buying that and only get the non-packaged stuff. I think the onus really is on supermarkets to cut their plastic use first. In the UK there's a whole 'zero-waste' revolution starting in some shops which is so inspiring: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/food-and-drink/news/britains-best-zero-waste-shops-find/

This is very interesting and something I was thinking of too: I'm currently seeing English, German and Spanish language due to the people I have become friend with and the settings they have. If you speak the language fantastic, but not all of us will. Wonder if we have any settings for newsfeed Read more… languages preferences aside from only selecting to see happiness.com in English/German. The issues of a building a global community 😁🙏

Simple living for happiness?

I love the idea of JOMO! Celebrating what we are supposedly missing! I think one that helps with living a more simple life is that humans are naturally very adaptable to our circumstances. When I moved to a quieter place after London I thought I would miss stuff, but actually no. Now I can't bear Read more… to go back there! Interesting how this changes with time and noticing it in the body and mind.

Simple living for happiness?
In my 20s and 30s I used to be someone that tried to cram as much as possible into my day: I'd feel guilty if I didn't squeeze those 24 hours dry! 🤣 More recently I've felt the desire to slow things down and simplify my life: if I can't do something, no worries, it can wait. I've learnt to savour Read more…moments through living a quieter and simpler life. I researched this more for an article for the magazine and have found that there are many benefits to living a simple life.
City life can be exciting, but I've realised I'm happier in a quieter city without noise and distractions, or out in the countryside walking in nature or being by the sea. I've also decided to reduce my consumption as part of living a more simpler life. I've never been one to have the latest iPhone model, but I've reduced clothes shopping, especially after seeing how much pollution the textile industry causes.
All in all, I feel that my simpler life is bringing me more happiness. Part of me has even been thinking of simplifying things further and looking for a quiet place to live in the countryside with some self-sustainability (maybe not just yet LOL).
I'd love to know if anyone has done something similar and how it went. I imagine it could be hard work also. Also what else have other people done to simplify their lives and how has it affected them? 🤔

Purr The Amish. True. Actually I don't know where to start with this. I'm just so bad. Retail therapy and consumerism. I endeavor to get environmentally friendly materials for my sewing business but it's significantly dearer. As are organic vegetables etc. I have got biodegradable garbage bags but with Read more… all the rubbish I put out, I kind of feel I need help with this issue. Supermarkets and manufacturers are going to have to start doing more on that level. And you are right, things should be made to last.
Meanwhile does anyone have maybe one idea that I can try. I have recently changed to a shorter washing cycle for instance. I have made some reusable cotton totes for sale too. If anyone would like one pm me and I will give you my shop addy. I know this is sort of the opposite of what you asked, but it's all food for thought, and hopefully practice.

What I find really interesting about how other people are living their lives is how the amish do it. I've read a book about the amish lifestyle, and i really liked parts of very much. I mean, it's quite intense, that they don't use electricity, but for example they only buy something when they really need it and then it a quality, that it will last for pretty much ever.
There is a store, where the amish buy, its called "lehmans" and the things there are produced in a way that they are very long lasting. and i like this a lot, because if you buy an electric kitchen machine or a mixer or something like that you kind of just assume that it will be broken after three years, and then you buy a new one.
But that's not normal! Shouldn't be that way, its a strane for the environment, it costs money, its not a consumer-friendly way! So I liked this reminder, that we should only really buy what we need, and then buy it in a way, that it will last long!

Veronika It's funny, when I moved to spain, I only had very few belongings with me. And I didn't miss a thing! But when I came back to my storage after a year I looked at my books, and cloths and so much stuff, which i had completely forgotten over the year! And now every thing i look at i thought: "Oh my Read more… god, i missed this! I need it! I want it back!" - and thats so crazy that the mind does that! Because i couldn't even remember the things before, but once i saw my whole mind was saying, that i still need it. Everything....
So it will be interesting, we will go to germany this summer to get our stuff, but i really want to try to not bring everything, because its not like we need any of it really...
BUT... so hard to say goodbye to belongings!! Please tell me you know that feeling, too 😋

How do you stop ruminating about bad stuff?
Going over past decisions or mistakes and beating myself up about stuff is something that's plagued me for ages. If I added up all the time I'd spent thinking 'what if' or 'why did I do it that way?' I think I'd probably start stressing over that too! 😂
I was checking out this article about Read more…ruminating on the site and apparently humans spend half our waking hours thinking about something other than what we're doing. 😲💭It also suggested three ways to try and stop ruminating on stuff.
For me, one of the ideas of distraction seems to work best. If I'm busy with work, friends, exercise etc, my mind does focus on that and blocks out any chance of ruminating on the past. I think I'm getting better with my rumination and I now try to switch my thoughts to focus on solutions of the future. It's an ongoing problem, still working on it!
Does anyone suffer with this? I'd love to hear what techniques have worked for other people to try and stop ruminating so I can try them out. Peace!

Tine I can relate. Going over the same thing again and again ...
There are numbers thrown around on the internet, but I think that's something for everyone to figure out themselves:
Which percentage of your thoughts is repetition?
Which percentage is negative?
Which is even both?
I try to identify Read more… those. Mindfulness meditation is one way to practice that. And the negative and repetitive thoughts I catch I tell them, "I see you negative repetition, you have been heard already, and you can leave." Name it to tame it. :-)

Ideas for when you're feeling lonely...
People often think it's only old people that get lonely but as someone that's moved around a lot, I've lived with loneliness as a younger person many times. I put together some ideas on what you can do to feel better when you're feeling lonely. The most beneficial for me is to actually just to get Read more…out of the house and do something by myself – a walk, a swim, pop to the cinema or just sit and people watch a while! 😀
Do you have any other ideas from the ones on the list? How do you personally combat lonely feelings? Love to know what helps for other people...

Lizzie I think getting out of the house helps so much, sometimes just being around people (even if you don't interact) is just what you need. I also must say since getting a dog it's hard to feel lonely, so can definitely recommend getting a pet too 🐶 I think getting out of the house helps so much, sometimes just being around people (even if you don't interact) is just what you need.
