Sometimes referred to as nondualism, non duality is often referred to as a mature or heightened sense of consciousness. In most areas of human consciousness, any person is thinking about themselves and their relationship with the world, their spirituality and the wider universe. However, this necessarily means there is a dichotomy between the person and everything else, according to adherents of non duality. When a state of nondualism is achieved, the 'I' is transcended and a sense of consciousness is created in which no such dichotomies are present. In other words, non duality is consciousness which transcends any sense of individuality, and that is at one with the universe.
Born in New York City in 1944, Jon Kabat-Zinn is a professor who works at the Medical School at the University of Massachusetts. He is an emeritus professor of medicine who has a particular scientific focus on the role of certain aspects of Buddhism, in particular, mindfulness within a Western tradition of medicine. He founded the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine at his medical school in 1979. He is also a powerful advocate for stress reduction programmes that allow patients to treat a wide range of conditions themselves. Jon Kabat-Zinn has been recommending that professionals in the US healthcare system take the role of mindfulness more seriously, which, he claims, can assist patients who are coping with stress, anxiety and pain. He also says that certain mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) methods that can be learned by following traditions in Buddhism are also able to help deal with certain conditions and illnesses.

Pacifism is a belief that holds that violence is always wrong and should be avoided. In the main, it is exemplified as opposition to war and militarism but it also often involves taking affirmative actions, such as non-violent protest, against such things. Non-violence is an individual's ability to go about their activities without ever recourse to a violent act. As such, the two are often linked. Non-violence has been used as a tactic in several notable political campaigns over the years, not all of them directly related to the pacifist movement. However, the two concepts are also connected through teachings in many religions, such as the Buddhist concept of ahimsa, which means to do no harm, or the concept of 'turning the other cheek' which Christ preached during his sermon on the mount.
