Jivamukti yoga was created by Sharon Gannon and David Life in 1984 and integrates the intellectual and physical aspects of yoga that leads one to spiritual awareness. 'Jivamukti' is derived from Sanskrit terms "jivan", which mean "individual soul", and "mukti" which means 'liberation', which is the practice's ultimate aim.
The Jivamukti Yoga Barcelona teachers are highly qualified, with a great passion for what they do. Students practice in a comfortable, relaxing environment where calmness reigns supreme. Jivamukti Yoga Barcelona offers four types of classes, each of them offering a different focus or level of practice, depending on the individual's need. The Open class is open to all levels, from beginners to those who know the most advanced poses. Working at their own pace, and following the teacher's guidance, students are led through the five tenets of Jivamukti Yoga: Shastra (scripture), bhakti (devotion), ahimsa (kindness), nada (music), and dhyana (meditation). This class is 90 minutes long.
The Basic class forms part of a month-long fundamentals course with a different theme each week. Week one focuses on standing asanas, week two: forward bending asanas, week three: backward bending asanas, week four: inversions, meditation, and ""putting it all together"". This class emphasizes alignment and students learn how to do basic asanas and use the yoga props. Beginners are especially encouraged to join all four weeks, but this class is open to all levels. This class is 90 minutes long.
The Spiritual Warrior class is an hour long and designed for those who don't have much time for practice. It is a fast-paced class, focusing on getting in shape. The sequence in this class is always the same, and best suited to advanced students.
Finally, the Jivamukti Beginner Vinyasa classes are for those who already have a basic understanding of a vinyasa practice. The class is 90 minutes long and suitable for beginners, although all levels are welcome.
