The concept was first pioneered by the sociologist Max Weber and is, therefore, sometimes referred to as Weberian social action to distinguish it from other theories that lay behind social behaviours. In sociology, an action is a behaviour or an act that is carried out by an individual. Such individuals – or agents, as they are more often called – do not behave in a social vacuum without reference to any other person. As such, Weber argued, actions must always be seen from the social point of view. A social act could consequently be seen as any type of act that a human being does which takes account of other people, whether this is a conscious thing or not. Anyone who interacts with other people in any way, therefore, could be carrying out some form of social action.
Income distribution is an economic measurement that looks at the gross domestic product (GDP) of a state and works out how evenly – or otherwise – this is distributed among its inhabitants. GDP is the total monetary value that a country has earned from all of its combined goods and services. However, global income distribution looks at the whole world's economy as a single entity and then assesses the distribution of such earnings across the global population. It does not measure or take into account wealth, however, which has been earned and stored in previous periods. The residual value of land, for example, would not be taken into account but money earned from growing crops on it would be.
In essence, goal setting is a practice that means people will commit to future objectives or achievements and work out a plan that they will try to stick to in order to accomplish them. The idea is that it is really a form of planning that tries to move you on from your current situation to a new, improved one. As such, setting goals in a formal or even semi-formal way tends to improve focus. It also often means that you can keep your 'eyes on the prize' more effectively by helping you to avoid distractions and other calls on your time that do not work towards the objective you have set for yourself. Setting goals will often mean committing to a level of effort in order to achieve them, but by their very definition, the goals ought to be rewarding in some way.
